Geek Life Awards 2011: Comic Book of the Year

Congratulations to the winner you crowned, Orcs: Forged for War as Geek Life’s Comic Book of the Year Winner 2011.

Orcs are the 99%. As a normal person and former soldier, the Orcs are hard working folks who just want to drive their enemies before them and listen to the lamentations of their women (Thanks, Conan). Like the rest of us, they know they are getting screwed at some level and yet they keep working. The pay isn’t good and the benefits are worse, but the Orcs are good at what they do, so they keep doing it. This graphic novel doesn’t remind the readers about the problems they have in their life, it reminds us that we all have something we do well, and while our actions might go without fanfare, we keep doing those things to feed our families and to live our lives. I identify with these Orcs and, to be honest, there have been a few days where I wish I could engage my foes with pointy things until I was covered in a mixture of their blood and brain matter. This is a fun and well done graphic novel that doesn’t make us dwell on our humanity, it revels in its lack of it!

    Greetings, fellow geeks!
On behalf of artist Joe Flood, everybody at First Second and myself I’d like to thank Geek Life followers for voting our graphic novel Orcs: Forged For War Best Comic Book of 2011.  We’re immensely flattered and very grateful.
Just as good, it’s apparent from the above summary, and your review, that you get it.  You understand what we were trying to do with the book, and that’s really gratifying.

Of course, there’s going to be some wrangling over whether it’s Joe or me who gets to keep the solid gold trophy.  I expect we’ll share it.  But there’s no dispute about the $100,00 dollar cash prize.  We’ve agreed to split it between the Rest Home for Retired Orc Non-gentle Folk and the Eisner Asylum for Deranged Writers and Artists.  We know they’ll put it to good use.

    Thanks again.
