Bride and Geek: Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed and TARDIS Blue

What’s a geek to do when she wants to get married in style — but needs to have some geeky touches because, well, that’s who I am and that’s how I roll?
Well, I went to to the most amazing and thorough source that the Internet has to offer: Tumblr.
Dan and I have a special spot in our hearts for Doctor Who since we started dating the same day that Series Six premiered, and so I sent the official Doctor Who Tumblr a request for suggestions about things to add to our upcoming wedding to give it a touch of Whovian flare.
Well, the Doctor Who Tumblr posted my request, and said post has nearly 600 notes! I even received a message from someone offering to draw up plans for a completely Who wedding. There are quite a few suggestions, ranging from simple to over-the-top and outrageous. I thought that I would share here some of my favorite ideas.
- Blue wedding invitations a la the invitations that the Doctor sent out in The Impossible Astronaut.
- River Song’s journal as the guest book during the reception.
- Jelly babies as wedding favors
- Bowtie pasta
- Amy and Rory action figures as the cake toppers
- TARDIS blue bridesmaid outfits
- A weeping angel ice sculpture
- Play “I Am The Doctor” for the wedding march instead of “Here Comes The Bride”
- Blue roses
- A life-size TARDIS
- Decorate the door of the reception area to look like the TARDIS so that it looks like we’re exiting the TARDIS when we come into the room.
- Gallifreyan writing as background flourishes on seating cards
Although they were all great ideas, this has to be the best comment of them all: “Invite your daughter to the wedding. She hasn’t been born yet? That’s fine, she’ll be there.”
We were originally going to have a deep purple be the main accent color for the wedding, but after all of these suggestions, we’re now thinking it may very well have to be blue. I loved a lot of the ideas. We can’t necessarily let Doctor Who overtake our wedding — after all, there are other geeky things to incorporate (like, did I mention that Dan proposed using a Mirror of Erised? Or that my engagement ring design is inspired by Galadriel’s ring, Nenya?) — but I did find a life-size cardboard cut-out of the TARDIS for purchase on Amazon.com, and so I think there will definitely be some very Whovian touches to our geeky wedding.
