Geek News: The New Face of D&D
Today Wizards announced that Dungeons & Dragons would be getting another edition. Though this may come as a surprise to some, many in the community have been feeling the tremors of the impending shift since the release of the D&D Essentials line two years ago. Additionally the D&D Insider articles Rule of Three and Legends & Lore have been dropping little hints about a more modular rules system that can be as complicated or as simple as your group desires.
As recently as Christmas, Wizards began it’s semi-annual house cleaning by letting go of long time D&D writers such as Rich Baker and Steve Winter, both of which have been with the company since 2nd edition. In addition they’ve brought back RPG super-star Monte Cook who was one of the men responisble for the 3rd edition D&D makeover. Cook has continued to please fans with his own game lines like the uber campaign, Ptolus and the popular Arcana Evolved updates to the 3rd edition d20 rules.
With any luck Wizards will hold true to its word in its recent press release and really listen to fans during their open play-testing of the new “5th” edition of Dungeons & Dragons. If you’re interested in signing up to play-test, you can do so here. In either case, you can bet that love it or hate it, this move will serve to stir up the RPG community as the announcement of each new iteration of Dungeons & Dragons has for the last decade.
