Geek News: Siri on the iPhone 4… Legally?

According to Apple Insider, developer chpwn has created a tool called “Spire” that enables iPhone 4 users to run Apple’s personal assistant, Siri, on their phones. The hackers also say that the release of iOS 5.0.1 (which was quickly pulled) allowed users to collect the files needed for a Siri port without having to break Apple’s copyright.

Spire uses a new method to obtain the files necessary for Siri, so it doesn’t have the copyright issues encountered by previous attempts. Similarly, rather than directing all traffic through a specific proxy server (and the associated privacy issues), Spire allows you to specify your own proxy server.”

So, what does this mean? With a little creative ingenuity (and perhaps the help of a friend with an iPhone 4S), you can have Siri on your iPhone 4 without infringing on Apple’s copyright.

Of course, you do have to jailbreak your iPhone 4 in order to use Spire, which could void your iPhone’s warranty, but if your phone is already jailbroken, this seems like an awesome addition to have on your phone.
