Beauty and the Geek: No7 Cosmetics Review

Out of foundation — and in dire need of more as Dan and I were heading out to a show later that evening — I headed to Target to replenish my supplies. There are often women in department stores that stop you and ask if you want to try their makeup products, then apply them to your face to show you how lovely they look. I’ve never experience that in Target before — until that day. I figured, why not? Dan had gone to the restroom, and I had a few minutes. The woman was showing off No7 cosmetics, touting “a range of hypo-allergenic and dermatologically tested products created using only trusted ingredients.” Apparently, No7 is a British company that has provided cosmetics and skincare products for over 75 years and “remains the UK’s #1 cosmetic and skin care brand.”

It’s hard to say no with a resume like that.

I tried No7′s Intelligent Balance Mousse Foundation. It’s a light mousse foundation that has medium coverage (the sales rep said it was full coverage, but I disagree) that goes on light and has a powder finish, which means you don’t need to put on foundation and then powder.

No7IntMousseFoundI wound up buying this foundation because I liked the light-weight feel of it. The jar was $13.99 and came with a small spatula. Over the following days, I applied the makeup myself, scooping a little out with the spatula onto a sponge to apply it to my skin.

Something I’m impressed with is that there was very little shine in my makeup, even after wearing it all day to work. It was fairly unnecessary to touch up my makeup, which is something I usually have to do thanks to the curse of the shiny nose. Like I said, they tout it as a full-coverage makeup, but I feel that it’s more a medium-coverage makeup. I had one very red zit crop up on my chin yesterday (thanks, Shark Week), and it shown like a red lighthouse beacon, drawing attention to itself when the foundation should have kept it under wraps.

Other than that one minor complaint, I really like this foundation. The sales rep told me that my color was “Blonde,” which is the second-lightest color; but it felt a little dark for me, but I bought it anyway. Dan and I had pictures taken the night we went out for the show, and the No7 mousse foundation looked very natural and flawless.

Overall, I have to say that I’m a convert. The price is on par with other drugstore brands, but the feel of the makeup reminds me more of a department store brand like Este Lauder (which I did wear for quite a while, so I’m not just pulling that out of thin air). I look forward to trying more of their products.
