Geeks on a Budget: MMOs on a Budget

Massively Multiplayer Online games are a big thing right now and have been for a while. We’ve all heard the stories about people overseas leaving their babies unattended while playing StarCraft or World of Warcraft, and there’s a ton of us (yes, myself included) who love the online games and social interaction. Today’s Geeks on a Budget will show you some of the more popular ones you can play for free. And yes, I understand that some people are hooked on their pay-to-play games, myself included, but that doesn’t mean you can’t try something new and free for a change of pace. I’ll outline three of the ones that are currently free to play or will soon be free to play that I think are the most worthy.
I have several friends that are totally into this game. There are options to buy extra items and goodies, but for the most part, you can successfully run a character without spending a dime. I suggest this one to all of the Tolkein-fans I know, the more diehard, the better. It has a great deal of depth and, as I’ve been told, is a welcome addition to the lore.
It’s not Free to Play yet, but it will be soon. I personally played this one for nearly a year, enjoying every bit of it. There are plenty of tidbits thrown in for the Trekkies as well as ways to bring people new to the universe in. You can visit places such as Deep Space Nine, deal with Tribble infestations, and run away from the Borg. I reviewed the new price model, and it seems rather fair, giving you options to pay a little more if you want more.
This one is also taking on a Free to Play model soon. It seems more limiting than Star Trek Online’s model, limiting your ability to speak with others as well as your inventory and currency, but it’s a very new game and is highly recommended by many players. Who doesn’t want to be mentored by Batman or Wonder Woman and have super-powers? Well, a few people wouldn’t, but fans of the DC Universe will be totally into this one.
Keep your eyes on this spot, everyone, because I’ll be doing a brief review of three more MMOs that are either free now or will be free soon! Perhaps we should call this MMOctober?
