Beauty and The Geek: Cold Weather Makeup Tips

Fall is here and winter will follow soon enough. Despite changes in weather, we don’t stop wearing makeup; but there are a few things we should keep in mind when the weather becomes colder — especially for those of you that live in very cold areas. Here are some tips for cold weather makeup.
- Avoid liquid foundations. If you’re just planning on working or going to school and then going home, don’t sweat it — but if you’re going out and about where you’ll be indoors and outdoors as you go from place to place, avoid liquid foundation. It doesn’t work well with drastic temperature changes from the frigid outside air to the warmth of indoors. Instead, find a good mineral powder foundation. If you want to keep your liquid foundation, try to find one that is silicone-based.
- Don’t use heavy face creams. It’s smart to moisturize under your makeup, especially when the cold weather starts to dry out skin, but stick to a light moisturizer — look for something that will absorb easily and dry quickly before you put on your makeup.
- Use mousse over cream. Avoid blushes and eyeshadows that are cream-based as they contain vaseline derivatives, which don’t work as well in cold weather. Instead, try a mousse blush or eyeshadow.
- Avoid pink and red makeup colors. Wearing these colors can amplify the pinkness in your skin that is visible after being out in cold weather.
- Lastly — and this one should be common sense – use waterproof mascara, eyeliner and lipliner.
