Surfing Drama: House – “Changes”

There are spoilers for this week’s House episode within; some things never change.

A recent lottery winner falls ill while trying to find his true love, a woman he had a romance with many years prior. Meanwhile, while the episode is called “Changes,” it seems to be dedicated to “enforcing character stereotypes” more than anything else. Cuddy’s mom threatens to sue the hospital for her poor treatment earlier in the season, Cuddy lies to House, House is a bastard, Thirteen is cynical and going to die, Chase sleeps with random girls, Foreman has anger issues and Taub is easily amused. The only thing missing from this episode was Wilson climbing out of a window to escape getting in trouble.

So, what else is new?

Not really all that much. We know how House feels about people, we know that people lie and they don’t change. We get it. There was, however, a rather touching moment when Cuddy’s mom is threatening to sue the hospital finally, and House figures out what’s really going on: she’s trying to get House and Cuddy back together by creating a common enemy for them to team up over. Candice Bergen is fantastic as Arlene Cuddy, and there’s a great chemistry between her and Lisa Edelstein’s Cuddy. One of the things that I feel is a great hallmark of good actors is how well you can relate to them in their interactions with other characters. Cuddy and her mom remind me a lot of myself and my own mother. The mother-daughter relationship feels genuine, and I feel like that is the only saving grace of this episode.

There’s not much left for this season, I’m hoping that something will happen to make me want to keep watching next season. We’ll see soon enough. In the interim, I hope that they at least give us some more good scenes involving Wilson — which this episode was sorely lacking.
