Trailer Park: Stolen Column Edition Part Deux

Keeping Dan’s seat warm for another week while he discovers what Kimchi is and how all the tech bigwigs love Korea and how “Thor” is already out there – damn you, Joslyn – you’ll be pleased to know that you’re in the very safe, very capable and very British hands of I, he of the tea drinking, Rob.

Also, as my prerogative as Senior Editor, I’m changing up the game!

Favoring the smaller screen, namely because I prefer not to have the backs of heads obstructing my view, for this edition of Trailer Park, I’ve decided to bring you some of the latest trailers and teasers for the years’ upcoming TV events. Like Scully said last time, I’m taking Dan’s silence as his blessing for babysitting between his eventual return when undoubtedly he’ll be showcasing some awesomesauce Korean movies.

If there’s one thing that the BBC do right, it’s dramas. Just, you know, not that awful, awful Outcasts. Two for the price of one, as it were, a trailer was released at the end of last week promoting their new Original British Drama season. While all on offer would certainly be worthy of your time, the two that are more than likely to pique the interest of our readership are the teasers for upcoming episodes of Doctor Who and the first British televised footage of Torchwood: Miracle Day. Honestly, it’s worth a watch even if only to hear the Black Sabbath backing. And to see Gwen (Eve Myles) deck Dichen Lachman.

In just over two weeks, Stargate Universe will come to an end, not only marking the end of the second spin-off, but also the first time in fifteen years that there the Stargate franchise will not grace the TV guide. When you look at it in that light, that’s kind of immense, but SGU just failed to encapsulate the magic of the series in an attempt to do something gritty in the vain of Battlestar Galactica. Dwindling viewing figures and being pushed from pillar to post in time-slots were the final nails in the coffin. The series finale airs in the US on May 9.

Set to make its nebulous debut this year, Fox’s answer to what you get when you breed LOST with Avatar, their new IP, Terra Nova not only looks stunning, but may also prove to be a water-cooler topic. Why? In 2149, the Earth is failing and Humanity is close to extinction. Cue those crazy science types who develop a portal leading back to the prehistoric lands of Earth where dinosaurs roam, some 85 million years into the past, giving a group of Humans the chance to start again. On Earth. Whether this will make for some causality bending fun remains to be seen, but I’m intrigued, even if it does sound a bit like Lost in Space with dinosaurs.

The gloriously crass and insanely awesome Misfits – a British comedy-drama series about a group of teenage offenders who while working through their community service, become imbued with superpowers – returns later this year for a third season, sadly, without leading man Nathan (Robert Sheehan). If you’ve not seen it, you’re severely missing out. It’s very Indie, very rude and very crude but that’s part of its charm and appeal. F-bombs, sex, drink and drugs. They’re anti-heroes, they don’t really care, but they do always seem to save the day. Most likely never to be remade, you need to see this. Although there’s no trailer for the new season, check out this fantastic fan-made retrospective of the series so far. This is probably the only instance where I think Kes-dollar-sign-ha works as “music”.

About Rob

Rob Kidman is an aspiring writer, have-a-go designer, avid tea drinker and geek from birth. Oh, and he’s British. What he doesn’t know about Doctor Who, isn’t worth knowing. Sends text messages in full, perfect grammar, no matter if it costs an extra 10p, as he believes txtspk to be an affront to the Queens’ English. Partial to cheese and pickle, random gherkins, and a fan of the miniature sombrero.

Wait, Dichen Lachmann’s in “Torchwood” this year?

And it’s a little hilarious if she’s supposed to be some sort of embodiment of American governmental power (which is what I got from that three second clip, LOL), since of course she’s actually Australian. Then again, Jack Bauer’s played by a Canadian, I guess.

“Misfits” is still, somewhat infamously, completely unavailable legally in any form in the U.S.

From what I’ve found, Dichen (who will always be, for me, Katya Kinski from “Neighbours”) only has a bit-part. If that’s true, we’ve probably just seen it!

Honestly not surprised that “Misfits” isn’t available in the US. I don’t think the general American audience are ready for Nathan’s advice of always carrying a packet of Fishermen’s Friend on your person.
