Trailer Park: Watch Out For the Psychic Tire
Once again it’s time to give you some of the coolest movie trailers out there, and maybe point out some flicks you haven’t seen. We have a good mix this week of highly anticipated blockbusters and funky independent releases, so let’s get started!
Hanna
I don’t know if this will be a great film, but it already has a great trailer. Hanna is the story of a teenage girl (Saoirse Ronan) raised by her father (Eric Bana) as a soldier in a remote area of Northern Finland. The CIA considers him a “rogue asset”, and Hanna must run across Europe to escape a ruthless agent played by Cate Blanchett. This weird, action-y movie represents something of a departure for Joe Wright, responsible for the Keira Knightley version of Pride and Prejudice as well as Atonement. Promisingly, the music in this trailer seems to come from the soundtrack of the film… the score is by the Chemical Brothers! Hanna is rated PG-13 and is scheduled for release April 8.
Scream 4
Back when the original Scream came out, it was something new… a slasher movie where everyone involved had grown up watching slasher movies. Now, that postmodern take feels a little cliché, and it looks like the series is trying to reinvent itself again for its fourth installment. Unnecessary? Certainly. But I have to say, this trailer dragged me. Now, of course, we have the post-post modern take on slasher movies, featuring new media and horror movies forced to change the rules because everyone’s already savvy about the old rules. Along for the ride is a very large cast, many of whom, I’m sure, die in interesting ways. David Arquette, Neve Campbell, and Courtney Cox all return from past installments, while a new cast of fresh meat includes Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Rory Culkin, Marley Shelton, Mary McDonnell (yes, really), Adam Brody, Anthony Anderson, and Alison Brie. Scream 4 hasn’t been rated yet and is scheduled for an April 15 release.
Perfect Sense
The latest film from David McKenzie (Young Adam) is being described as an “apocalyptic romance”. It stars Ewan McGregor and Eva Green as a guy and girl who fall in love during some sort of global pandemic that causes people to start losing their senses. The trailer mostly tries to sell the love story, though it descends towards chaos as it goes on. Based on McKenzie’s past work it seems unlikely that it will receive much of a US release, but the big stars at the top certainly make that a possibility. The trailer comes to us courtesy of MTV. Perfect Sense is playing this week at Sundance.
Rubber
So… this movie exists now. Described by one quote in the trailer as “Roger Corman by way of Samuel Beckett”, Rubber is the creation of “legendary electro musician” Quentin Dupieux. It features a single tire that inexplicably comes to life and, just as inexplicably, now possesses psychic powers that allow it to blow off the head of whatever it’s looking at. Don’t believe me? Watch this thing. I swear this movie is real. And the fact that Magnet has picked it up implies it will at least get a decent DVD release and be available on Netflix.
Love
This film owes an obvious debt to movies like 2001 and Solaris, but it has a much weirder backstory. The genesis of Love came from Tom DeLonge, who as some of you might know was originally a member of Blink 182 and is now the frontman of the band Angels and Airwaves. Their music scores the film, but it was written, directed, produced, etc. by newcomer William Eubank, who built the space station set in his backyard! The story is still unclear, but it appears to involve an astronaut stranged in space after losing contact with Earth. There is no distribution deal yet for Love, but folks in Southern California will get a chance to see it at the Santa Barbara Film Festival.
Special thanks goes to Slashfilm, without whom I wouldn’t have known about a couple of the films in this week’s edition. See you next time!
