Geek Grub: Maryland: Martha and Mary’s
Two weeks ago, while working in Reisterstown, Maryland, I came upon a restaurant that I had to share with you. I am not normally into local bistro looking paces; let’s face it: too often they have food that requires you to stick your pinky out while you eat it. Martha and Mary’s is anything but a pinky-out kind of place. First, let’s look at the clever name; for those of you who aren’t familiar with the story of Martha and Mary from the Christian Bible, I’ll give you a quick summary (Stick with me Kevin!). So Mary was a great host and loved to talk to people while Martha was a hard worker. In the end, they were both well know for their positive traits and it turns out, the owners are like those two ladies of old.
Reisterstown, Maryland has a subdued and quaint feel to its downtown; however, Martha and Mary’s (located at 75 Main St.) adds a bit of hip flare that makes it stand out. My coworkers and I happened upon Martha and Mary’s during lunch and there were quite a few cars parked in the lot, which is generally a good sign. We walked in and were greeted by an extensive menu displayed on a pair of HD TVs. That’s right, HD TVs! The menu was easy to read and it seems easy to change items and add daily specials. Great idea, ladies!
As we approached the counter, we asked the cashier how things worked. She replied that we placed our order at the counter and then they brought us the food. I asked what their specialties were and she rattled off two or three items, including a Chicken Philly Cheesesteak sandwich. She explained that instead of using shaved chicken, they made theirs by cutting up a big chicken breast. At $7.99 for a combo that included one choice of seven different sides and a beverage, how could I go wrong? For an additional $2.99 I was able to add a cup of Cream of Crab soup.
The place was hopping and the food came quickly. The presentation was great and the portions were good. I started with the soup and would have been happy just having that. Martha and Mary’s Cream of Crab soup is like euphoria in a bowl! I couldn’t help but moan a few times while I savored it, and the sandwich was outstanding as well. The chicken tasted great, the bread was high quality, the toppings were fresh cut, and I didn’t need to add any mayonnaise or other condiments to enjoy it.
I didn’t get a chance to return to Martha and Mary’s on my trip but I would have been glad to. Martha and Mary’s has great breakfast menu that is served until 11:00 AM on weekdays and 1:30 PM on Saturday and Sundays. They even have Scrapple! Their hours vary slightly on week days but you can count on finding them open at 6:30 AM to 9:00 PM. Their lunch and dinner menus include comfort favorites like Chicken-N-Dumplings for $7.99 and Mark’s Meatloaf for $8.99. They have pizzas, salads, soups, and an eclectic assortment of quesadillas including a Crab-Adilla for $8.99.
Martha and Mary’s serves great food in a great atmosphere at a great price. The service was fast and friendly and I left full. Martha and Mary’s is located at 75 Main St. In Reisterstown MD. The Phone number is (410) 833-3336 and they can be found on the web at marthaandmarysrestaurant.com.
