Geek-Cube: Podcasts Save Your Day
I’m starting off the month of October with something I’ve touched on before. More than once I’ve said that there are ways to entertain yourself while you’re working on the boring and monotonous. My usual solution was to listen to podcasts, so I though I would share a few that I’m fond of and may or may not be a co-host on. Some of them are purely entertainment, some are news, and some might teach you a thing or two. Let’s face it, there’s nothing wrong with a little education from time to time! I’m fairly positive you can find all of them on iTunes, too.
As many of you know, I’m one of the three hosts of Orange Lounge Radio, and I’ve already written up a big article on us. We talk about video game news and the gamer lifestyle, and you can visit our website to find out more. Even better, we’re an official affiliate of Geek Life! Each episode lasts a few hours, so we’ll take up a good chunk of your morning.
This one is hosted by our lovely Marron, Shadow, and me. We discuss comic book releases, what we’re reading, how the market is oversaturated with Deadpool, and how a certain writer may or may not be ruining Iron Man. We’re five episodes old now, and only getting better. Each episode lasts around an hour.
Bobby is a longtime friend of the OLR crew and one of our fellow Allgames.com broadcasters. He discusses the news around video gaming and culture and gives his solid impressions of the status of the gaming industry. He also has another show he does called Friday Night Gaming that’s just as fantastic and informative.
Podculture is a podcast for geeks by geeks. Brad, Christina, Adam, and Glenn host this rad show and discuss their thoughts on the sci-fi universe of visual entertainment. Plenty of Stargate and Battlestar Galactica for the lovers of aliens and spaceships!
Stuff You Missed in History Class
Sarah and Katie are very much on the ball with this podcast. They choose a topic and then discuss it in detail, going through rumors, myths, and legends around past historical figures. There’s a few running themes, one being exhumation, and after a while, one begins to pick up on this. They do fantastic stories and love receiving actual snail mail. The blog there is fantastic. I totally recommend this one.
A History of the World in a Hundred Objects
This BBC Radio 4 podcast is exceptional, and the host, Neil MacGregor, Director of the British Museum, occasionally sounds like Stewie Griffin. In a nutshell, the history of the world is told through 100 objects that are in the British Museum’s collection, showing how each are an example of humanity’s development. It’s a very cool podcast if you’re into history like I am, and I personally think it’s very cool to hear about how we’ve come to where we are.
Those are some of my favorite podcasts, but definitely that’s not all there is! These are definitely a great way to pass the time while you’re working and are tired of listening to Pandora or AOL Radio. Definitely better than the “Smooth Jazz” station some of my coworkers loved to play. Please share with me what podcasts you, my lovely readers, also enjoy at work!
