Geek News: Split Season for Doctor Who Next Year

Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival yesterday morning, Steven Moffat exclusively revealed that the next season of Doctor Who will be split in two.

The show’s sixth season since its revival back in 2005 will air the first half in spring 2011 and return in the Autumn, ahead of another Christmas special.

“The split transmission is the result of a request from Steven Moffat to write a new Doctor Who story arc which involves a big plot twist in the middle of the series,” a BBC press release announced.

“By splitting the series Moffat plans to give viewers one of the most exciting Doctor Who cliffhangers and plot twists ever, leaving them waiting, on the edge of their seats, until the autumn to find out what happens.”

Moffat went onto say, “The split series is hugely exciting because viewers will be treated to two premieres, two finales and more event episodes. For the kids it will never be more than a few months to the next Doctor Who! Easter, Autumn, Christmas!!”

Talking at the show’s press conference at the Festival, he promised that the “seven episodes at Easter, build to an Earth-shattering climax… a game changing event for Amy, The Doctor and Rory.”

He also confirmed that in the sixth season, “[we] will find out who River Song is. Definitely,” and that if the time came for them to break the regeneration limit, they’d “invoke the emergency protocol.”

“We’d make something up.”

Hiya geeks. Question from a Dr Who noob. Since we never got the series here in Mexico till a year ago, I’m thinking of going back and starting on Season one of the current show, but wonder if I need to start with the previous, classic show.
Thanks in advance for the responses

You don’t need to go back and watch the classic series for you to get on with the current one. However, if you’re in the mood for some retro Sci-Fi, you should totally check some of the old episodes out. Biased, but they’re really good :)

It is in fact impossible to watch the entire original series since many of the earlier episodes are now lost. And there are hundreds anyway. So “Rose”, the start of the modern series, is as good a jumping-on point as you will ever find.
