Comic Quick Pick – Week of August 25th
So, I finally went and saw Scott Pilgrim yesterday. The theatre was empty save for myself, my best friend, and two dudes sitting in the row in front of us. During the previews — although we never spoke directly to the two dudes — it was somehow decided that MST3K-esque commentary was appropriate not only for the previews, but for certain parts of the movie itself. All in all, it was a very fun movie! However, if it’s all right, I’d like to stick to actual comics for a little while.
Avengers #4 – Oh, Tony Stark, I don’t care; I still love you even if you are a creepy old man in the future. Is it just me or is this kind of turning into Quantum Leap meets the direct-to-DVD animated movie The Next Avengers? At least I liked both of those things, I think. Anyway, I dig time-travel stuff, and the first three issues of this series were pretty good, so I’m going to stick with it for now.
Bram Stocker’s Death Ship #4 – Here’s something that fell under my radar that I’m going to have to pick up. Writer Gary Gerani brings us a horror story, heavily inspired by Bram Stoker’s Dracula, that involves a “harrowing, nightmarish sea voyage from Transyvania to England.” I’m a sucker for the original material, so I think I’ll check this out.
Charmed #3 - Yeah, I know. Don’t you judge me! The story is actually halfway decent, and Phoebe isn’t quite as annoying in comics form as she is when played by Alyssa Milano on television. Anyway, someone — or something — is hunting down and killing innocents that the Charmed Ones have protected or saved in the past, so it’s a race against the clock to find out who’s behind the sinister plot before more innocents die.
Dean Koontz’s Frankenstein: Prodigal Son vol. 2 #2 — For reals?! I didn’t know that they made this book into a comic! Now I’m pretty excited. I really enjoyed the book, so now I have to find the first volume and see if this is any good. If it is, I promise to let you know. If not, well, the book was really interesting! It’s Dean Koontz’s take on the Frankenstein monster.
Star Trek: Burden of Knowledge #3 – This is a series I’m really enjoying. The first two issues had self-contained, episodic stories that were both interesting and held the spirit of the Original Series. This week, the Enterprise arrives too late to save another ship in distress and things take a turn for the worse when it looks like it could be a Federation member behind the catastrophe! So far, this book has not disappointed.
I think that’s about it for me for this week. I also need to pick up last week’s issue of Darkwing Duck, and I may have to check out the Dragon Age comic that IDW Publishing has been putting out. There’s also something from Boom! Studios called “Dracula: Company of Monsters” coming out this week that seems interesting; it appears that the premise is that a company actually buys Dracula. The 6th installation of the JJ Abrams Star Trek comic adaptation is also out this week, as is issue 3 of the 6-part mini-series Spike: The Devil You Know, which I’ve heard good things about.
So, I’ll leave you with all of that as food for thought — and, of course, ask my favorite weekly question: what’s on your pull list?
Comic Quick Pick is a weekly column discussing the Wednesday pull list of a comic book fan.
