Comic Quick Pick – Week of August 11th
Oy gevalt, it was a busy weekend! There were lots of comics to be had — but sadly, not all of the ones I wanted. The comic book store near my house was out of S.H.I.E.L.D. #3, can you believe it? They’re pretty nice people, though, so I won’t hold it against them. Let’s take a look at what this week has to offer, shall we?
Birds of Prey #4 – Gail Simone continues to astound with the comeback of the Birds of Prey series. It’s quite unfortunate they’ve had trouble with consistent artwork and keeping one artist. Hopefully the art problems will go away so that the story can be fully enjoyed. This issue, it’s Black Canary vs White Canary; not everyone will be kung-fu fighting, but these two ladies certainly will (Yes, I know that was horrible. Don’t you judge me)!
Fringe: Takes From The Fringe #2 – This limited series is great for fans of the series looking for something to hold them over until the new season. This upcoming issue features two short stories based on the TV show. One of the stories involves backstory for Agent Broyles, and the other promises some of that X-Files-esque goodness that I love about Fringe with a tale about a library night watchman that gets more than he bargained for when he explores the restricted section.
Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors #1 – Okay, so I’m the tiniest bit of a Guy Gardner fangirl after the Blackest Night-related issue where he suggested the Lanterns create a Tholian Web. Guy begins his secret mission for Atroticus, but this may cause problems with fellow Green Lantern Hal Jordan. Plus, Kilowog and Arisia. Who doesn’t like Kilowog?
One #1 – Haven’t heard much about this one (no pun intended), but it sounds pretty interesting. Here’s what the solicit has to say:
After an era of great peace The thirst for power is rising once more and its a thirst that can only be quenched with blood. War is looming once more in this grim and gritty fantasy tale, and with everything on the line, four heroes – Faras, Haggarth, Omir and Masdin – begin their dire quest for the glimmer of hope known as ‘The One,’ a legendary sword that lies waiting for the great battle to come!
X-Men #2 – The X-Men vs Dracula. What more is there to say than that? Plus, the cover has some pretty sweet artwork of Blade and Wolverine fighting.
That wraps up my pull list for the week. There are some other things worth mentioning, of course. Since we ended with vampires, we’ll start with that. If you like vampires, this week’s Archie & Friends #116 is starting a Twilight spoof called Twilite. I occasionally still read Archie, and it might be fun. Who knows?
If you’re a fan of Daredevil, the Man Without Fear, Shadowland #1 and Shadowland: Blood On the Street #1 both come out this week, along with Daredevil #509. I don’t follow Daredevil, as he’s one of my least favorite characters, but from what I understand from people who do like Daredevil, this is supposed to be a really good story. Plus, Daredevil #509 has Luke Cage and Iron Fist on its cover, and they’re badass, even if Luke Cage doesn’t have a fro anymore.
The Steve Rogers: Super-soldier limited series continues this week with issue #2, Mark Millar is at it again with Ultimate Comics Avengers 3 #1 this week (although Ultimate Comics Avengers is highly disappointing in comparison to Ultimates 1 and 2) and Spectacular Spider-Girl wraps up with its final issue. Also, for anyone who still cares, Thanos Imperative #3 comes out this week, too.
Batman #702 continues Grant Morrison’s wacky shenanigans, AKA an untold Bruce Wayne story between Batman RIP and Final Crsis, and Batgirl takes on Clayface in Batgirl #13.
