Geek News: Google Lets Users Sign in on Multiple Accounts

As mentioned early in the day yesterday by the Google Operating System Blog, Google is implementing a feature that will allow a user to sign in to multiple Google accounts simultaneously from the same browser.

The Google Account Management page should soon offer the option of “multiple sign-in” but don’t be worried if you don’t see it yet; like with their changes to the image search feature of their search engine, this is a feature that appears to be rolling out in increments.

The new option requires opting in on the Account Management page, under the Personal Settings column. Right now, the option works for Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Sites, Google Reader, Google Voice, Google Code, and the App Engine; it does not yet apply to Google Docs or Wave.

Still, this is a great advantage for people who have multiple Google accounts, and would like the convenience of using multiple instances in one browser. I know that I personally have different things attached to two different Gmail accounts, so I feel like this is a great idea.

I can see where some might see this as laziness, but I don’t agree. I have a personal Gmail account that I’ve used for years and that I have things like Reader set up with; but my “professional” e-mail address that I hand out to design clients is also a Gmail address, and my Google Voice and Adsense are attached to that. I used both the Reader and Google Voice on a daily basis, so not having to sign out of one and sign into another – or use two different browsers – is a time-saver and a convenience.

Expect to see the “Multiple sign-in” option on your Google account within the next few days, and should allow you to sign in to up to three Google accounts simultaneously.

I think the only people who would call it lazy are upset and unhappy people who are not given options, they are just told what they do and don’t want their service to do for them, yup you know who you are…
