Yesterday in Dublin testimony began in the trial of Christopher Clancy, accused of setting fire to his former school and causing a million euros worth of damage. When police (or the “garda”, as they’re known in Ireland) arrived at the scene of the crime they found Clancy “in a purple suit, with green hair, a white face, and red painted lips.”
Clancy actually recorded himself spreading gasoline in the school hallway and then setting it on fire with his phone, planning to send the video to his friends. He pled guilty to the charges. He is 19 years old and says he started the blaze in the building “because it is run by hypocrites and I didn’t like the way they treated my friends.” Clancy had transferred to another school six months before the incident.
There has not been any explanation given for why he chose to dress up as the Joker. In incidents like this, there is often a wave of speculation as to what extent the behavior was caused by the media consumed by the kid. There has been a lot of talk about violent video games, heavy metal music, etc. Would this guy have done this if he hadn’t seen The Dark Knight? It’s hard to say that.
In the movies when something happens like this it leads to a thrilling action sequence. We can have fun with the Joker when Batman is inevitably going to beat him up. But in the real world, the Joker is just another miserable kid in a courtroom. Read the story in the Irish Independent.
