Comic-Con Wrap, Day 4: Sucker Punch, Godzilla, Eureka, The Goon, and More!

The final day of Comic-Con is always the slowest, since people have to start heading back to their lives. However, there’s still plenty to talk about. Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch footage is apparently some sort of new drug, Eureka added a surprisingly awesome new cast member, we got word of a new Godzilla movie, and Smallville promised it will get out of our hair. Let’s finish this…

-Legendary Pictures announced that they are working on a new Western Godzilla movie. Here is some concept art from it. Yep, looks like Godzilla, which already puts it one up on the Emmerich version.

-A reel of footage from Zack Snyder’s next film Sucker Punch was screened immediately after the Harry Potter panel yesterday, creating general confusion among the crowd of mostly Potter maniacs. Techland described the film as “one of the trippiest, most hallucinogenic creations to arrive here in quite some time.” Emily Browning plays a girl trapped in a mental asylum who imagines a fantasy dream world that jumps between high fantasy dragons, World War I battles, tall-tales about samurai, and much more.

-CBR has the full story on yesterday’s stabbing incident, along with some of the statements by police. The alleged perpetrator may have been angry at the victim for arriving early for the Marvel panel (really?). Anyway, police said this sort of thing is very rare as they have not had any other problems with Comic-Con attendees. Here is a picture of the guy being lead away by police. That T-Shirt is ironic, isn’t it?

Alleged Stabber

-The Eureka panel included a pretty major reveal of a character’s return that I’m not going to spoil. They also said that Wil Wheaton will be returning for a bunch of episodes and then there was aa big surprise reveal of the show’s newest cast member… Felicia Day! She has signed for ten upcoming episodes. Meanwhile, Warehouse 13 producers said that the H.G. Wells arc is part of a shift from artifact-of-the-week episodes to more ongoing storylines. They also said we’ll see multiple love interests for the main cast this year, and that Faran Tahir (who played a terrorist in Iron Man and the Captain at the beginning of Abrams’ Star Trek) will be joining the cast as “the new Regent of the Warehouse.” They also showed a scene from the crossover between the two shows later this year.

-It looks like the third season of Fringe will be borderline insane (in a good way). The season will spend a lot of time in the Alternate Universe where Olivia was stranded at the end of last year, with Jasika Nicole saying “really bizarre things are happening, and the Fringe team is investigating… but now you have two different Fringe teams doing the investigation.”

-David Fincher is trying to produce an animated movie version of Eric Powell’s The Goon comic book series, and showed a very cool trailer that he’s taking around to studios to try and sell the idea. The story is essentially about two friends, one of whom is a mob enforcer, who live in a city infested with zombies. See the trailer for yourself:

-Antoine Fuqua (Director of Training Day and Brooklyn’s Finest) and Wesley Snipes have co-created a comic book for Radical Comics called After Dark. It is described as “a gritty futuristic tale where drugs and the environment are at the forefront of societal problems.” It will be a three issue limited series.

-The full pilot for the CW version of Nikita (coming in September) was shown to a packed house. It apparently takes more after the Luc Besson film than the Peta Wilson USA Network TV series. Maggie Q plays the title role, and said she was happy to be able to get a part like this as an Asian-American. Producer Craig Silverstein promised there would be “no Rimbaldi prophecies.”

-The Rocketeer is set to return to comics despite the death of its creator, Dave Stevens, two years ago. IDW announced a four-issue series with stories from Darwyn Cooke, Bruce Timm, Gene Ha, and John Cassaday, with covers by Alex Ross. We’ll be seeing this at some point in 2011.

-They showed the first episode of the next season of Archer and according io9 it killed, which is not a stretch because that show is made of awesome. However, Season Two doesn’t actually show up on FX until January 2011… WHY ARE YOU TORTURING US?

-We’re still digging ourselves out of all the Marvel mayhem from last night. Here’s a picture from the footage they showed, showcasing Chris Hemsworth as Thor along with his hammer Mjolnir. This looks absolutely perfect to me, but I’m sure someone will find a way for there to be something wrong with it:

Also, Hugo Weaving said at the Captain America panel that he based the Red Skull’s German accent on Werner Herzog. This is one of those things too out-of-left-field to make up. And just when you thought Marvel was done with their reveals, today this appeared at their exhibit on the floor. It’s the Infinity Gauntlet, used to villainous purposes by both Loki and Thanos over the years in the comics. Which of the movies this is even from is unknown at this time.

-The Smallville panel emphasized that the 10th season this fall will be the last (they swear guys, really!). There was a promo shown that included Clark flying in a black and silver suit, Lois Lane in a desert, Hawkman (if you stopped paying attention, and really who could blame you, Michael Shanks showed up twice last year as Hawkman), and Chloe with Dr. Fate’s helmet. It was also teased that members of the Suicide Squad might put in an appearance.

-Marvel’s Spider-Man panel teased that October 2010 will “officially be the end of Brand New Day Spidey” and that the upcoming “Origin of Species” arc will wrap up a lot of running threads from the Spidery corner of the Marvel Universe. “Big Time” will be the new subtitle replacing “Brand New Day”. They showed an image of Spider-Man in a black and green costume (really, more costumes?) fighting Hobgoblin, and discussed how it will work with Amazing Spider-Man coming out twice a month.

-One of the undercurrent stories this year is that Comic-Con may have outgrown San Diego… the search for hotel rooms and the traffic this year seem to have been truly heinous. The convention’s contract with the San Diego Convention Center runs out in 2012 and there are rumors that Comic-Con might move to Anaheim or Las Vegas in 2013 and beyond. Hence this protest outside the Convention Center Sunday, which gets points for involving a goat:

I’ve had a great time following all the news from this year’s Comic-Con this year. The biggest thing I learned is that there has never been a better time to be a geek than right now. We’ll keep following many of the stories here, and who knows, maybe we’ll meet next year in San Diego.

That shot of Chris Hemsworth as Thor looks amazing — and I fangirled a little over the Infinity Gauntlet.

If Comic-Con does move to Las Vegas, the entire staff is welcome to stay at my place. Bring your own sleeping bags!
