Comic Quick Pick: Week of July 21

A fan favorite from my previous blogging adventures at Avengers Tower, the Comic Quick Pick is back! Every Monday, take a trip with me into the world of comics as I discuss my pull list and the titles that I’m most excited about each week. So, without further delay, let’s get right to it!

Avengers #3 – The adventure continues with this Brian Michael Bendis-written and John Romita Jr illustrated adventure. The Avegers’ kids have made a mess of things in the future and Kang went back in time to solicit the help of the Avengers with dealing with the problem – except, Kang may not have been completely honest about the truth of what’s gone wrong. Are we surprised? No, not really. I’m an on-the-fence Bendis fan, meaning I really love some of his work and really hate other parts of it, but the first two issues of Avengers were good, so I’m looking forward to seeing more of this story as it unfolds.

Brightest Day #6

Brightest Day #6 – Well, it looks like we may finally be getting some answers about the formation of the White Lantern, along with what that means for the twelve who were brought back to life at the end of Blackest Night. I sure hope so! The pace of this story has been slower than a glacier for the first five issues. I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m ready for the setting up to be over and for the story to unfold. Don’t get me wrong, I love Geoff Johns and I’m sure there’s a method to his madness, but the pacing of this story thus far has been mental murder.

Charmed #1

Charmed #1 – Okay, I admit it. I was a very big fan of the TV show Charmed; so, you can imagine my surprise and delight when I found out that Zenoscope Entertainment is releasing a new Charmed comic. It appears the story will pick up right where the television series left off. Piper, Phoebe and Paige have defeated the bad guys and been victorious in the battle against evil, and now they can live happily ever after – or so they thought. I won’t lie, I’m very, very excited about this comic. Let’s hope that it lives up to the series it’s based on.

All right, so it’s a pretty short pull list this week for me. Normally I have a bunch of things on my list, but I’m coming back from a short hiatus of reading comic books, so I need to ease myself back in gently. A few other comics worth mentioning are Dracula and The Marvelous Land of Oz; both of these Marvel limited series wrap up this week, and both have been incredible from what I’ve read so far. I’m a very big fan of the classics, and Marvel has done a great job of doing many of the literary greats justice in comic form.

Also coming out this week are Ultimate Comics Avengers 2 #5 and Ultimate Comics New Ultimates #3. I have mixed feelings about both of these series, but I have always been a fan of the Ultimate universe (well, before Jeph Leob blew it up, anyway), so I have to give these comics a chance; I’m feeling a bit lukewarm about them right now, though, so they didn’t make my pull list top picks.

Another comic that looks like it might be good is Batman Beyond #2; I didn’t have a chance to see the first issue when it came out, so I’ll have to pick up both – and I’ll let you know what I think next week.

Okay, so maybe my pull list isn’t so short after all.

So, as I wrap up this week’s Quick Pick, I ask: what’s on your pull list?

Until next week!

    Charmed? Oh, Tiarra, no.

  • Tiarra

Don’t judge me! At least it’s not Twilight. :p

  • Rob

Yeah, well, I guess that’s something!

Seriously, Batman Beyond was much better than I expected it to be. It was less like the show, and more like a true continuation of the Dark Knight. Plus, the last couple pages absolutely blew me away. T, I might have to write one of these myself, I definitely dig it!

  • Tiarra

@Jay: Well, I really liked the show, which is the reason I was considering picking it up.

Don’t get me wrong, it still has the elements of the show, but it’s a bit darker, which really fits with the overall tone. It’s the show, for those who’ve grown up and want to see an adult version. I think you’ll dig it.
