Geek News: Thor’s New Threads

Feast your eyes on this true believers - Asgard from space! Marvel has recently released a photo revealing the costume designs of Odin and Loki from the upcoming film. Not since “Transformers the Movie” have I seen such simple character designs turned into a jumbled Hollywood mess. Obviously I wasn’t aware that this was going to be the story of Beta Ray Bill and not of the Norse god, Thor.

When the first image of Chris Hemsworth as Thor was revealed I was quite pleased with the outcome, despite the rubber look of it all. It’s almost reminiscent of the cape crusaders costumes of the Schumacher era, but I didn’t realize how far this would go. Even the chamber where this photo was taken looks like an alien space craft. I have defended this movie from all the fans that said that Thor couldn’t possibly work in the movie universe that Marvel has set up, but now looking at this I fear for what this movie might become, but by the gods I hope I’m wrong.

To add insult to injury it was also revealed in the statement from Marvel that both Thor and The First Avenger: Captain America will be released in 3D, despite being shot in 2D format, a la Clash of the Titans, which gave it a paper cut-out look. Expect a lot more to be revealed soon with SDCC around the corner.

Our affiliate, Chris from The Homeworld has his own opinions on Odin’s latest garb.

Thor will be released on May 6th 2011, staring Chris Hemsworth as Thor; Anthony Hopkins as Odin and Tom Hiddleston as Loki; while The First Avenger: Captain America will hit screens on July 22nd 2011.

I don’t know, I think the costumes and the set there are pretty cool. I mean, it’s “Thor”, it’s probably not going be gritty or realistic. Though I’m not sure what’s up w/ Thor and Loki wearing what look like slacks. Maybe it’s casual Friday in Asgard.

I actually really like it. I think the eyepatch looks a little weird, but other than that Odin looks good. and OMG THOR. He looks amazing.

I have to say that one of the things that had always been a stumbling block for Marvel when it comes to doing live-action versions of their comics, is the costumes. In defense of the rather complicated nature of the costuming, if you read the Thor comics in the 90′s, they always had a very elaborate, alien, and over the top way of drawing the Asgardians, and even beings like the Celestials in other Marvel comics.
