Geek News: Alamo Drafthouse Rolling Roadshow 2010

I myself have never made it down to San Antonio’s Alamo Drafthouse, but it has a national reputation as one of the best movie theaters in the country for real film geeks. One of their big annual events is the “Rolling Roadshow”, a series of outdoor screenings around the country that take place at locations or settings used in the films being shown. For example, past years have featured a screening of Close Encounters of the Third Kind at Devil’s Tower and one of The Warriors at Coney Island.

There are a couple of really cool things about the Roadshow. One, there’s stops all over the U.S., so you’re fairly likely to find one near you no matter where you live. (If you live in the U.K., you can always check out the film series at Somerset House…) And two, all the screenings are completely free and open to the public. There are also usually a variety of fun accompanying events and activities.

This year’s line-up was just released, and it is a doozy. If you’ve got an unlimited travel budget, I just figured out what you’re doing this August:

AUG 6 – Jackie Brown at Del Amo Fashion Mall in Los Angeles.

AUG 7Dirty Harry at Washington Square Park in San Francisco

AUG 8 – There Will Be Blood at the Kern County Museum in Bakersfield, CA

AUG 8Convoy and Red Dawn double feature at the Ft. Union Drive-In in Las Vegas, NM

AUG 13 – The Blues Brothers at Joliet Prison in Chicago

AUG 14 – Robocop at the Russell Industrial Center in Detroit

AUG 19 – Rocky I, II, & III at the Philadelphia Art Museum

AUG 20 – On the Waterfront at Pier A Park in Hoboken, NJ

AUG 27 – The Godfather Part II on a rooftop in Little Italy, Manhattan.

Keep your eyes on the Alamo Drafthouse website for more information. Among other things, I’ll bet one of the August 8 dates is actually a typo. If you live near one of these screenings, I have a feeling you owe it to yourself to check it out.
