UPDATE: Johnny Depp is NOT the Next Doctor

Earlier this week we published a story about some out-there rumors that Johnny Depp was going to star in American Doctor Who movie. Well, the good folks over at io9.com took the radical step of actually calling the people who have the rights to the show, the BBC, and asking them if there was any truth to this. A rep told them that there were currently no plans for a Who theatrical film, with or without Depp, and that the rumors were “pure speculation”.

The story did seem fishy from the get-go, as Depp is an extremely busy actor and according to the stories the film was scheduled for a 2012 release. There is not yet any word about the “Moffat lost the script for the Christmas special” rumors, though, so I’m sure that will turn out to be true.

So Rob, you can stop your letter-writing campaign. It worked.
