What if…?

So, for those of you unaware, currently Jack Kirby’s estate and beneficiaries are suing Marvel/Disney over the rights to the iconic characters that Jack helped to create.  It is highly unlikely that this is going to cause any major ripples in the Marvel U, but I am curious as to what would happen if it did.  So please, accompany me if you will as we ask, much like Marvel themselves have done, “What if Marvel loses the Kirby characters?”

What If?

So, let’s say that Kirby’s estate wins this lawsuit and retains the rights to all of the characters that he helped to create, and following this decide to move them to a new brand.  What does this mean?  It would mean that Spider-Man, Captain America, Thor and many other characters that help to drive the Marvel brand, would no longer be a part of it.  Now, in the event that this would happen, we can hope that there would be time to finish story lines, and end their time with Marvel with a bang.  In this regard, I agree with the gentlemen from the Watchtower Podcast.  They suggested that Marvel get the best writers and artists, and give these heroes the most epic, and compelling ending you can possibly imagine.  With that in mind, I’d like to put forward my idea for who could make such a finale absolutely perfect.

First, there is simply no way one writer would be able to handle this story – a story which would all but end the Marvel Universe.  To that end, I would recommend a team of superstars that have the chops and the talent to make this a story that will never be forgotten.  I would recommend that they team Mark Millar, Gail Simone and Warren Ellis to handle the writing needs, and the glue which would hold these talents together would be Geoff Johns, who would be in control of the overall plot.  Now, yes, two of those folks are DC exclusive, but I think for this event, DC should and would be willing to allow Marvel to borrow them.  As to the art, we would need some of the best artists who have ever put pencil to paper.  Personally, I would like to see Jim Lee, George Perez, Ivan Reis, the Kuberts, and Alex Ross.  Oh, and I would like to make sure that Rob Liefeld has his place as well – that place being as far away from the page as humanly possible.  For the story itself, well, that’s not really my place to say, but if we have those individuals working together, there is no way it couldn’t be phenomenal.

This is merely my opinion, and my “What if…?” If Marvel loses the Kirby characters, what would you like to see happen?  Huge story with a true ending, and perhaps even the deaths of the heroes we have known for so much of our lives?  What artists and writers would you like to see handle it?  Sound off in the comments below, because we want to know what you think!
