Geek News: Wonder Woman Is Changing

Happy 69th birthday Wonder Woman, we’re going to change everything about you!

According to the New York Times, Wonder Woman is getting a makeover, as well as an all new background, courtesy of one J. Michael Straczynski.  For some reason, her background as a princess of the Amazons and a great warrior wasn’t all that appealing to Mr. Straczynski.  Now, as opposed to being an ambassador into “Man’s World,” she will have been smuggled away from her home as a baby, with her family slaughtered and her home destroyed.  Honestly, this just might get me to stop reading Wonder Woman, which is a shame because I love the character.  I loved her strength, and perseverance, her devotion to her friends and family, and her desire to bring the tenants of her people to those in the outside world.

Where once we had a woman who fought and struggled, shed her sweat and her blood to come to our world, we have merely a woman.  Where is the glory and honor of being the best among her sisters, chosen to represent them to a world they had long ago abandoned.  With this ret-con, are we also going to lose the gods that have been such a predominant part of her world?  Will there no longer be battles with Ares, or errands for Hera?  I understand that in the world of comics, things are always changing, but all I can do here is shake my head and sigh.  It would seem readily apparent that Mr. Straczynski didn’t learn the lessons of the past, and we could possibly have another Superman Blue/Red on our hands.  I sincerely hope not, and I hope that people will come to their senses and returns Diana to what has made her great for almost 70 years.

Oh, and as to the costume…  it’s Jim Lee, so I can appreciate the art, but this is simply not Wonder Woman.  At least not to me.  However, that is just my opinion, check out the two different designs and sound off your opinions in the comments below.

This seems to be some kind of flailing attempt to bring Wonder Woman “down to earth” and more “identifiable” with the common reader. If so, its terribly silly. Part of the appeal of the DC pantheon of heroes is, for lack of a better term, their over the topness.
Hey, maybe next we can have Superman trade in the tights for Docker’s and instead of being an alien with powers he’s a private eye with special Kanye West shades that shoot lasers.

    Straczynski craps on another super-hero.

I don’t know, it’s not as if Wonder Woman’s got a spotless history. At one point didn’t they take her powers away and make her a spy or something? Anyway, while I could deal with the Amazon business, the Olympian Gods stuck in the middle of DC comics never quite worked for me. I’d be open to a “reboot” if the writing was good. And I’m sure the original version won’t be going away any time soon, if my past experience with superheroes tells me anything.

What’s all the fuss about? No one buys Wonder Woman books. The only reason they haven’t canceled the series is because she’s one of the big three. If she wasn’t selling well, DC wouldn’t be making drastic changes to her. Plus, her most memorable moment was breaking a dude’s neck. Just sayin’.

If JMS can do to Wonder Woman what he’s done with Thor and The Brave and The Bold series, then I’m all down. Hell, I might start reading Wonder Woman.

Just another attempt to change a classic costume into something modern, these never work and eventually make the return to the classic look, blue superman anyone?

Yet another reason that I do NOT like DC.

See, I don’t dislike DC for this, I dislike JMS. This is like him doing to DC what he did to Marvel with One More Day. Retconning for no reason. Oh well, give it 18 months and we’ll be back to normal. I hope.
