Geek News: Sony May Recall Vaio Laptops for Overheating Problems

Sony announced earlier this morning that it may plan on recalling over 530,000 Vaio laptops due to overheating problems.

According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, the company said that a temperature control flaw could possibly create excess build-up of heat in certain Vaio units that would cause the shape of the laptop to distort. Sony also admitted to the possibility that the head build-up could be harmful to the laptop user as the heat could cause skin burns. It is important to note that Sony has not, however, received any reports of people being burned by their laptops.

If Sony goes through with the recall, it would include around 259,000 laptops in the U.S., 103,000 in Europe, and 172,000 in Asia. The laptops affected include F and C series Vaios that have been on the market since January of this year. If your laptop is recalled, you can either have Sony pick it up for repair or download software that will update the system and fix the temperature control flaw.

Sony seems to have a history of overheating problems; in 2006 they had a massive recall of laptop batteries because some of them were overheating or exploding – and just two years ago, in 2008, over 400,000 Vaio laptops were recalled due to overheating issues.

My advice would be to give up the Vaio and get a Mac, they’re less likely to explode.
