Geek News: Hulu to Offer Paid Subscriptions

In a move that surprises, well, no one really, Hulu has announced that it’s branching out its services to include a paid subscription service.

The new service, Hulu Plus, will cost $9.99 a month and provide access to entire seasons – both current and previous – of television series from NBC, ABC, FOX, and other networks. It will also be the first version of Hulu that’s available on a variety of devices such as the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, PS3, Xbox 360, and on that giant screen where you sometimes like to watch shows. What’s that called? Oh, right – a TV.

Don’t worry; the free Hulu service isn’t going away, but it will offer fewer episodes and will still only be available on the limited devices that you have access to Hulu with right now (re: computers).

If you’re interested in Hulu Plus, you can request a preview invite at www.hulu.com/plus. $10 a month may seem steep, but if use of Hulu were to replace, say, cable television, it would be well worth the price.

I have heard people say they won’t pay if there’s still commercial (which they will be), but I don’t feel that way. This seems like a good deal to me. Plus I actually like commercial breaks, even if I’m not big on the actual commercials. I don’t like the way we just forge forward from act-ending cliff-hangers on DVD without giving me a moment to think about it! ;)

Agreed. Commercials are also great for potty breaks!

And, really: if it’s just one 30 second commercial the way it is now, that’s much better than 4-5 minutes of commercials on regular telly.
