Geek News: London – Summer Series 2010
For us of the British persuasion, July is considered (or at least very much hoped to be) the height of summer. There’s always some slight trepidation going into the month – mainly we don’t want to be too overly optimistic and put the mockers on seeing even a glimmer of Sun. That’s why we keep the sandals close, and the brollies even closer.
There’s one week each July that I always hold out for, and that’s the week that marks the return of the Summer Series to the glorious Somerset House.
Each summer, the prestigious former government building, set overlooking the Thames, sees its grand and wonderfully gothic courtyard transformed into an open-air concert venue.
The marriage of the neoclassicism architecture and the thrashing, modern tones is something to be truly appreciated, and is quite the metaphor for London culture.
It’s hard to believe that it’s been a decade since the first ever Summer Series. For me, the line-up of 2004 was a classic – PJ Harvey (to whom I have photos of), Belle & Sebastian, to name a few.
This year, the series runs from the 8th to the 18th, and while some shows are sold out (you know where to look if you’re so inclined), some are still available:
- Mystery Jets – Thursday 8th July
- Air – Friday 9th July
- Noah and the Whale – Saturday 10th July
- N-Dubz – Sunday 11th July
- The Temper Trap – Monday 12th July
- The xx – Tuesday 12th July
- Gil Scott-Heron – Wednesday 14th July
- Florence and the Machine – Thursday 15th July
- Corinne Bailey Rae – Friday 16th July
- The Divine Comedy – Saturday 17th July
- Soul II Soul – Sunday 18th July
Tickets can be booked online through Ticketmaster or if you fancy a chat, through Somerset Houses’ box-office on 0844 847 2461.
