What will you do for Geek Pride Day 2010?
Geeks all over the world will find a reason to show off their geekiness and/or nerdiness on Tuesday, May 25th, but what is Geek Pride Day, exactly? How did it begin? The answer may surprise you.
Geek Pride originated with an annual celebration festival created by a man named Tim McEachern, who held the festival at a bar in Albany, New York from 1998 to 2000. However, Geek Pride Day was first celebrated in 2006 all over Spain (way to go, Spanish geeks!) and across the Internet. Geek Pride Day became an instant hit on that day when, in Madrid, 300 geeky participants came together to create a human version of Pac-Man.
Geek Pride finally came to the United States in 2008 and has spread across the world since then. This year, new places all over the world will celebrate as geeks gather together in Halifax, Nova Scotia as well as in Budapest. The Dancing Camel Brewery in Tel Aviv, Israel will celebrate Geek Pride Day with a screening of Revenge of the Nerds and a midnight reading of the Geek Manifesto — a manifesto that lists the basic rights and responsibilities of geeks, including the right to show off one’s geekiness and the responsibility “to be a geek, no matter what.”
It’s a pretty cool concept, one that seems to be catching on more and more every year. If the worldwide love of geeks hasn’t quite convinced you yet that you need to participate, here’s one more tidbit that any geek can appreciate: Geek Pride Day is celebrated on May 25th in celebration of the premiere of the first Star Wars movie on that same day in 1977.
So, the question must be asked: how will you celebrate Geek Pride Day?
